Slow Horses - Season 2

Slow Horses is a spy thriller television series based on the Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron. The series premiered on Apple TV+ on 1 April 2022.[1] Season two premiered on 2 December 2022.[2] In June 2022, the series was renewed for third and fourth seasons.[3] It has received critical acclaim.

The series was given a straight to series order by Apple TV+ in October 2019, with Gary Oldman announced to star.[9] The cast was rounded out in December 2020 with the additions of Olivia Cooke, Jonathan Pryce, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jack Lowden. Initially the series was to consist of two seasons, but two additional seasons have since been ordered.[3] Each season has been based on an individual book in the Slough House series.

Filming of the first season began on 30 November 2020, in England, and continued into February 2021, with Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas spotted on set in Westminster, London.[10] In July 2021, filming continued in Stroud, Gloucestershire.[11] It was originally intended to film earlier in 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[12][10]

In June 2022, ahead of the second season premiere, the series was renewed for third and fourth seasons, which will be based on the next novels in the series, Real Tigers and Spook Street.[3][13] Saul Metzstein has been announced as the director of season 3.[14] As of March 2023[update], filming of Season 3 had been completed and filming of Season 4 was about to begin.[15]

The first season received critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% approval rating with an average rating of 7.7/10, based on 55 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Slow Horses refreshes the espionage genre by letting its band of snoops be bumbling, with Gary Oldman giving a masterclass in frumpy authority."[17] On the review aggregator Metacritic, the season has a weighted average score of 78 out of 100 based on 22 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18]

The second season also received critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 100% approval rating with an average rating of 8.4/10, based on 25 critic reviews. The website's critical consensus says, "Slow Horses says nay to the sophomore jinx with a second season that might be even better than its supremely addictive predecessor."[19] On Metacritic, the season has a weighted average score of 84 out of 100 based on 10 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[20]

After Slow Horses became a hit on Apple TV Plus in the spring 2022, fans didn't have to wait long for the next mission at Slough House, as Slow Horses season 2 is now available on the streaming service.

Slow Horses season 1 was well received by critics and audiences, with the series receiving a 97% from the former and an 89% from the latter, per Rotten Tomatoes (opens in new tab); you can check out What to Watch's review of Slow Horses here. The show is part of a recent string of well received new series from Apple TV Plus, like Severance, The After Party and Pachinko, to go along with Apple TV Plus' flagship series, Ted Lasso.

It makes sense then that Slow Horses season 2 is going to be adapted from the second book in Herron's series, Dead Lions (opens in new tab). Here is the official synopsis for the new season from Apple TV:

"In season two, long-buried Cold War secrets emerge which threaten to bring carnage to the streets of London. When a liaison with Russian villains takes a fatal turn, our hapless heroes must overcome their individual failings and raise their spy game in a race to prevent a catastrophic incident."

Just about everyone from Slow Horses season 1 is returning for season 2, including Gary Oldman as the head of Slough House, Jackson Lamb. Lamb started out as the boss who epitomized Slough House's who-gives-a-crap attitude, but we saw throughout season 1 that he is still a capable spy. He seems more ready to get back into the game in season 2, but he still has his trademark put-downs ready to go. Oldman has been acting since the '80s, and while he still has Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer coming up, the Oscar-winner recently said he is considering retirement (opens in new tab) after Slow Horses ends its run (whenever that may be).

As far as new actors joining the show, they include Samuel West (All Creatures Great and Small), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Peaky Blinders), Kadiff Kirwan (This Is Going to Hurt) and Rade Serbedzija (The Blacklist, Taken 2), who is set to play the antagonist on the season.

Even before Slow Horses season 2 debuts on the streaming service, Apple TV Plus has officially renewed the spy series for a third and fourth season. Not only that, but they also gave us the synopses for season 3 and season 4.

The first season of Slow Horses was a gem, something you would expect of great TV on its third season. One of its greatest strengths was in forgoing a convoluted spy plot for dark comedy, fully-formed characters and satire of British institutions. As the season finale drew to a close, we were treated to a surprise sneak peek of season two.

Starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman, Slow Horses season two is directed by Jeremy Lovering and finds long-buried Cold War secrets emerge which threaten to bring carnage to the streets of London. When a liaison with Russian villains takes a fatal turn, our hapless heroes must overcome their individual failings and raise their spy game in a race to prevent a catastrophic incident. 041b061a72
